Step 1: Choose a Style

The first thing you need to do is to choose a style of music for your song. Band-in-a-Box 2014 has a StylePicker window that lets you browse and select from over 1500 styles. You can filter the styles by genre, feel, time signature, tempo, and more. You can also listen to a demo of each style before you choose it.

For this example, we will choose a jazz style called _JazzBebopFastSwing_. You can find it under the Jazz category in the StylePicker window. Once you select it, you will see the style name and description in the main window of Band-in-a-Box 2014.

Step 2: Enter Chords

The next thing you need to do is to enter the chords for your song. Band-in-a-Box 2014 has a Chord Sheet window that lets you type or click the chords for each bar of your song. You can use any chord symbol that Band-in-a-Box 2014 recognizes, such as Cmaj7, Dm7b5, G7#9, etc. You can also use slash chords, inversions, and extensions.

For this example, we will enter a simple 12-bar blues progression in the key of C. You can type the chords in the Chord Sheet window or use the Chord Builder tool to enter them. The Chord Builder tool lets you select the root note, quality, and bass note of each chord from a drop-down menu. You can also use the mouse to click on the on-screen keyboard or guitar fretboard to enter chords.

Step 3: Generate Tracks

The next thing you need to do is to generate tracks for your song. Band-in-a-Box 2014 has a Track Panel that lets you choose which tracks you want to generate and what instruments you want to use for each track. You can choose from over 2000 RealTracks and RealDrums played by real musicians, as well as over 150 MIDI SuperTracks and MIDI styles.

For this example, we will generate four tracks: Bass, Piano, Guitar, and Drums. We will use RealTracks for all of them. You can select the RealTracks from the Track Panel by clicking on the track name and choosing from the list of available RealTracks. You can also listen to a sample of each RealTrack before you select it.

Once you have selected the tracks and instruments you want to use, you can click on the Generate button at the top of the main window to generate your tracks.
